Headquartered in Manhattan Beach, the JMMF was created by Jimmy Miller’s family after his tragic passing in 2004 to share Jimmy’s love of surfing by developing the now world-renowned Ocean Therapy Program, which helps those suffering from mental and/or physical illness. We were honored to sponsor the JMMF BeneFiesta, their annual gala to raise funds for the Ocean Therapy Program. Who Was Jimmy Miller?
Jimmy Miller was an avid surfer, traveler, paddleboarder, and Manhattan Beach resident who fell in love with surfing at the tender age of seven. As an adult, Jimmy started Camp Surf to teach others about his favorite sport and his love of the ocean. He tragically took his own life in 2004, and his family decided to carry on his legacy by forming the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation to help others through surfing through the Ocean Therapy Program.
The Ocean Therapy Program
The Ocean Therapy Program was developed to use surfing as a form of therapy, one of the first organizations in the world to do so. Therapy sessions are guided by licensed therapists and serve those in the military, at-promise youth, special needs kids and adults, veterans, and healthcare workers, with the objective of giving them a safe space to begin to heal or provide them a positive experience amidst ongoing challenges. By formalizing this surfing protocol, the JMMF created the world’s leading Ocean Therapy Program.
