One of the coldest, wettest winters on record is finally in the rearview mirror here in California, and with that comes the much-acclaimed natural phenomenon known as the Superbloom.  2023 promises to be one of the most spectacular years yet for this singular natural wonder, where wildflower seeds that lay dormant for years finally blossom after the onset of excessive rain.  If you’re looking for a day or weekend trip to take in the California poppies, verbena, sunflowers, desert lilies, and evening primrose, look no further - we’ve got you covered:

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve x Paso Robles

Located near the city of Lancaster and featuring eight miles of walkable trails, the California Poppy Reserve is open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year, with stunning views of the surrounding valley and San Gabriel Mountains.  Stick to the trails, leave Fido at home, and bring your camera, but don’t “doom the bloom” (i.e., pick flowers, trample stuff, etc.) – a specific request this year by park officials.  In past years, damage to the areas in and around the Superbloom in California left its mark, so be courteous to Mother Nature and your fellow visitors!  Day passes are available, and their “Poppy Cam” (link below) means you can get a glimpse of the fields before beginning your journey.  After a day of exploring and posting, drive north to Paso Robles, check in to the Hotel Cheval, and head over to the “Bruce Munro: Light at Sensorio” art exhibit, featuring a two-installation light display by the acclaimed British artist.  Billed as #6 of the “50 Places to Visit” by The New York Times, this unique experience is a sight to see and features a Field of Light, live music, food and drinks.  Wake up the next day and discover the Paso Robles Wine Country, including over 250 tasting rooms as well as local restaurants featuring farm-to-table fare.  This Central Coast hamlet is home to a charming downtown district as well and is sure to become a perennial favorite.  Find our more here: www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=31189; www.hotelcheval.com; www.sensoriopaso.com.

Walker Canyon x Laguna Beach

Walker Canyon, near Lake Elsinore, is one of the most popular places in our state to take in the seasonal blooms and is about a 2 ½-hour drive from the South Bay.  Get an early start and explore over 490 acres of ecological reserve.   When you’ve had your fill, head to the Montage Laguna Beach and check in for a night of sipping beverages by the pool while savoring the sweeping views of Catalina Island.  Then drive up PCH on your way home, stop in for a bite at Las Brisas on the water, and enjoy the renowned galleries and shops of Laguna Beach before heading back to the South Bay.  Plan your getaway here: www.wildlife.ca.gov/Lands/Places-to-Visit/Walker-Canyon-ER, www.montagehotels.com/lagunabeach/, and www.lasbrisaslagunabeach.com.
